SCIATICA: TREATMENT PROCEDURES

Injections applied into the back can also help. Most of these injections contain two substances, an anaesthetic - to kill the pain -and steroids, to reduce inflammation. Some injections commonly used include:
Epidural injections. These can bring almost instant relief as they numb the lining of the spinal cord, effectively stopping pain signals from getting through. While some patients find that a single injection cures the problem permanently, many others have to have them repeated frequently, perhaps as often as once a month. One possible good reason for having an epidural is that it can buy pain-free time during which the body's own natural healing process may rectify the underlying problem.
Nerve blocks. These are applied directly into the root of the nerve that's causing the pain. Once again, response varies greatly: some patients only need one injection, others require frequent repeats.
Sclerosant injections. The ligaments of the back are injected with a substance that irritates them, this irritation promoting the formation of new fibrous tissue. This therapy is mainly used in cases where vertebrae are damaged and grate against each other. Usually, it takes eight weeks or more before improvement is noticed as it takes time for the new tissue to form.
While an operation or other surgical procedure may be the only reasonable alternative eventually left open to some sufferers, it usually makes sense to first try other, less invasive avenues, leaving surgery as a last option.
Incidentally, should any of the above have made you apprehensive about your prospects, it's worth remembering in this context that:
About half of the people suffering from nerve root pain recover within six weeks.
Of those more stubborn cases that are referred by doctors to hospital out-patient departments, only one per cent of these will eventually require surgery.

Taking prescribed medications with most vitamins is safe as is taking herbal complexes that are available through health food stores. However, you should always check with your doctor, your pharmacist or your naturopath. They are all trained to know what can go with what.

Weight loss

Overweight is most commonly a result of overeating and lack of exercise. Overweight and fluid retention often go together with people who have glandular problems or under-active thyroids. In such cases an iodine and phosporous deficiency may be the cause.
