Drug Uses
Purinethol is taken while treatment of leukemia. The medication helps to treat psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pediatric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and polycythemia vera as well.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Purinethol is considered to be one of the medications which are used against cancer. It is an antineoplastic (antimetabolite). Purinethol prevents cancer cells from growing. As a result, cancer cells are destructed. The main aim of using Purinethol is treatment of leukemia.
Missed Dose
Take Purinethol as determined by your doctor. If you omit a dose of this medication, take it immediately. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up. Then go back to your usual schedule.
Storage
Keep Purinethol at room temperature, between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep in a hermetic and light-resistant container. Store it away from light, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Save Purinethol beyond the reach of children and away from pets.
Warnings Precautions
Inform your doctor or pharmacist in case you have the following medical conditions: blood problems, allergies, liver or kidney problems, infections, chickenpox, earlier treatment of cancer.
Purinethol lowers ability of your body to act against infections. Inform your doctor immediately if you feel chills, rash, fever or sore throat. Do not touch inside your nose or in your eyes if your hands are not washed. You shold be very cautious with se caution with sharp objects in order not to get cut.
You must not take any vaccination/ immunization without consulting your doctor. Moreover, you are not to get in touch with people who have had an oral polio vaccine. Do not consume alcohol while taking Purinethol. You should use contraceptives while you take Purinethol.
This medicine must not be taken during pregnancy because it may cause harm to human fetus. On condition you suspect you are pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. You should discuss all benefits and risks of taking Purinethol during your pregnancy. It is not known whether this drug passes into human breast milk. Stop breast-feeding while using Purinethol.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor and inform him or her immediately if any of these side effects take place: weakness, skin changes, hair loss, dark urine, painful urination, unusual stools, blood in stools/urine, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in stomach, fever, sore throat/mouth, unusual bleedings.
Ask for medical attention immediately in case any of these serious side effects take place:
serious allergic reactions (chest tightness; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; rash; hives; difficulty breathing). If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
More Information
