Drug Uses
It is used to control some types of seizures while treating epilepsy. It treats the manic-depressive illness (the manic phase of bipolar disorders) and prevents migraine headaches.
How Taken
Take the medicine as determined by your doctor. Take it by mouth with/without food. Take depakote with food for reducing stomach irritation if you have stomach upset.
Swallow Depakote whole. Do not chew, break, crush it before swallowing.
If you take Depakote at the same time each day you will not forget take it.
Even if you feel better continue to use this remedy. Do not miss your dosages. Depakote effects the best results when there is a permanent level of it in your body.
Drug Class and Mechanism
This medication is an anticonvulsant. It reduces/prevents the quantity of seizures by way of controlling the abnormal activity of nerve impulses in the central nervous system and brain.
Missed Dose
If you omit a dose of Depakote, take it immediately. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and follow your everyday dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of Depakote at once.
Storage
Keep Depakote at room temperature, below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Save it away from light, heat and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom. Store this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
Do not use Depakote on condition that:
you have allergies to any Depakote;
you have low levels of the enzyme ornithine carbamoyltransferase, some liver conditions, disorder of urea cycle.
Inform your health care provider or doctor instsntly if any of these apply to you.
Important :
Take Depakote with caution in the elderly.
Do not stop using this remedy abriptly.
Depakote is associated with inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms may include appetite loss, stomach pain or vomiting. Contact your doctor immediately if any of such symptoms occur.
Taking Depakote may results in wrong results of some tests (eg. urine ketones). Ask your doctor before changing your dose of diabetes medicine or your diet.
Laboratory tests may be taken during use of Depakote. Such tests can help to control your condition and check possible side effects. Do not miss all doctor and laboratory appointments.
Depakote should be taken with caution in children younger than ten years old. Children younger than two years old may be at highten danger of liver problems.
Refuse from driving or performing some other unsafe tasks until you know your reaction to this drug.
Depakote can cause serious harm to the fetus. Contact your doctor in case you think you may be pregnant and discuss all benefits and risks of taking this medication. Depakote passes into breast milk. Refuse fromDo not breast-feeding while taking Depakote.
Possible Side Effects
Advice with your doctor if the following side effects take place:
hair loss; headache; indigestion; nausea; trouble sleeping; vomiting; rapid weight changes; appetite change; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness.
Ask for medical attention at once if the following serious side effects happen:
severe allergic reactions (chest tightness; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; rash; hives; difficulty breathing); seizure control loss; memory loss; chest pounding; urination problems; extreme tiredness; irregular heartbeat; fever; body discomfort; hallucinations; hearing loss; involuntary movements of the arms and legs; persistent nausea, vomiting, pain in stomach; sore throat; swelling of the legs and arms; tremor; bleeding or bruising; weakness; vision changes; yellowing of skin or eyes; abdominal cramps; menstrual periods change; changes in mood and behavior; confusion; dark urine; difficulty speaking; involuntary movements of face, mouth, tongue or jaw; joint pain; loss of appetite; loss of coordination.

Depakote must be taken only by those for whom it is prescribed. Do not give it to others.
