Drug Uses
Emsam is helps to treat depression. Sometimes it may be also taken for some other conditions as directed by your doctor.
How Taken
Take the medication as determined by your doctor with a glass of water (240 mL).
You can use it with/without food.
Contact your doctor or a health care provider all questions you have about using Emsam.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Emsam is known to be MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor. It is not known how this remedy works.
Missed Dose
In case you missa a dogse of Emsam, take it immediately. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up.
Storage
Keep this drug at room temperature, between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep it in a hermetic and light-resistant container. Save Emsam away from light, heat, moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Save this remedy out of the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
Do not the medication if:
you have allergies to its ingrediens;
you are taking another MAOI, certain diet preparations, sympathomimetic, sibutramine. You should not take Emsam on condition that you have taken these medications within the last week;
you are currently using a 5-HT agonist, oxcarbazepine, nefazodone, apraclonidine, carbamazepine or methylphenidate,;
you are planning elective surgery;
you will be receiving cocaine/local anesthesia;
you are using fluoxetine/have taken it within the past five weeks;
you arecurrenyly using bupropion, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, St. John's wort, dextromethorphan, meperidine, methadone, tetracyclic antidepressant, buspirone, cyclobenzaprine, propoxyphene, tramadol, tricyclic antidepressant or if you have used some of these medications within the last week;
you have adrenal gland problems .
There are some medications interacting with Emsam . Inform your health care provider in case you are currently taking any other medicines, especially the following ones:
if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant;
if you are breast-feeding;
if you have a history of bipolar disorder, some mental/mood problems, suicidal thoughts, uncontrolled muscle movements;
if you have ulcer, seizures, problems with blood, disorder of metabolism, problems with heart;
if you are currently using some dietary supplement, prescription/nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation;
if you are allergic to some substances.
Sometimes certain medical conditions interact with Emsam . Tell your pharmacist or doctor in case you have the following medical conditions:
Buspirone or apraclonidine because of severe high blood pressure possibility. Nefazodone or tryptophan. They may cause seizures, fever, nausea, mood changes, heart or breathing.
Tramadol - the seizures danger may highten.
Carbamazepine/oxcarbazepine may highten the danger of side effects of Emsam.
5-HT1 agonists, methylphenidate, sulfonylurea, insulin, meglitinide antidiabetic because their side effects may be hightened by Emsam.
Serotonin syndrome may happen after taking bupropion, MAOI, meperidine, methadone, cyclobenzaprine, serotonin/orepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, sibutramine, SSRI, St. John's wort, sympathomimetics, dextromethorphan, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, oral selegiline, propoxyphene, tetracyclic antidepressant or tricyclic antidepressant.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case of the following side effects:
dry mouth; sleeplessness; diarrhea.
Ask for medical attention immediately in case any of these serious side effects take place:
serious allergic reactions (chest tightness; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; rash; hives; difficulty breathing); changes in sexual ability; irritability; panic attacks, sleeplessness; painful menstruation; light sensitivity; enlarged pupils; irregular heartbeat; loss of memory; nausea; agitation; aggressiveness; headache; swelling; vomiting.

Emsam should be used only by those patient for whom it is prescribed by a doctor. Do not share it with other people.
