Drug Class and Mechanism
This remedy treats patients who suffer Alzheimer disease. It belongs to cholinesterase inhibitors. Such cholinesterase inhibitors block the acetylcholinesterase action. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme which controls acetylcholine destruction. Acetylcholine is known to be used by nerve cells for communication with each other. Lowered acetylcholine levels influence some of the symptoms of Alzheimer disease in a negative way. Exelon is believed to increase acetylcholine concentration by way of inhibiting the enzyme destroying acetylcholine. This rise improves the thinking.
