Sumycin (Tetracycline)
Uses of the Drug
Sumycin helps to treat some bacterial infections.
How to Take
Sumycin should be taken as per the doctor’s recommendations. The label of the medicine should be checked for the right instruction on dosing.
Sumycin can be taken orally without food.
Sumycin should be taken with adequate amount of water.
If you are taking antacids that contain aluminum, magnesium; or calcium preparations having iron, zinc, bismuth, or sodium bicarbonate; or certain calcium loaded foods (eg, dairy products, milk, calcium-enriched juices), they should not be taken 2-3 hours after or before taking Sumycin.
Even though you feel good do not stop taking Sumycin.
Drug Mechanism and Class
Sumycin is the tetracycline antibiotic. It functions by slowing down growth of the sensitive ???bacteria’ by taking interest in the protein production required by bacteria for growing. If the growth of the bacteria can be slowed down, the defense mechanism of the body will destroy them.
Missed Dose
If you ever miss a dosage of Sumycin and are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Storage
Sumycin should be stored at the room temperature. It should be stored away from light, moisture and heat.
Warnings Precautions
Sumycin should NOT be taken if:
- you are prone to allergies to a single ingredient present in Sumycin or some
- other ???tetracycline antibiotics’ (eg, doxycycline)
- you take methoxyflurane or acitretin
You should get in touch with the doctor very soon if you notice any of the above-mentioned problems.
Some of the medical conditions might have interaction with Sumycin. Inform your pharmacist or doctor in case you are having any other diseases and particularly if you are having any one of the below mentioned list:
- if you have conceived, or planning to get pregnant, or breast-feeding
- if you take any nonprescription or prescription medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation
- if you are allergic to foods, medicines, or some other substances
- if you are having diarrhea, kidney problems, or stomach infection
Some of the MEDICINES MIGHT HAVE INTERACTION with Sumycin. Inform your pharmacist or doctor in case you notice any one of the below mentioned medicines:
- Isotretinoin or Acitretin as side effects, like increased pressure present in fluid around the brain, might occur
- Digoxin, oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) or methotrexate, methoxyflurane, as Sumycin might increase their adverse effects.
- Atovaquone, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), lithium, or penicillins (eg, amoxicillin) Sumycin might reduce their effectiveness.
Common Side Effects
All medicines can have side effects. However, there are some people who have either less or no side effects. Check whether you have any of the side effects as mentioned below and in that case consult your doctor as soon as possible:
* blurred vision; Black hairy tongue; bulky loose stools; difficulty swallowing; diarrhea; headache; hives; fever; redness or inflammation of tongue; hoarseness; indigestion; loss of appetite; joint pain; nausea; mouth sores; rash; sore throat; sensitivity to sunlight; stomach pain; itching and swelling of rectum.
You should consult your doctor immediately in case you have the serious side effects as mentioned below:
* Serious allergic reactions (hives; rash; itching; tightness in chest; difficulty in breathing; swelling of face, lips, mouth, or tongue); itching; nausea; infection (chills, fever, sore throat); serious skin reaction to sun; vaginal discharge or irritation; vomiting.
